Distance Learning and Its Benefits
The pandemic has grown the importance of distance learning globally.
Distance education, which is so different from traditional education, that consists of studying from home where students and teachers are physically distant, while classroom learning is the type of education system in which the learners and the teachers work under one roof.
The approach of distance learning has three types of delivery modalities, depending on the students’ available resources: the Online Distance Learning (ODL), Modular Distance Learning (MDL) or Self-learning Module (TV/Radio-Based Instruction) and Blended Learning.
The Electronic means are used to keep students in touch with teachers, provide access to communication between students and bridge the gap and distribute educational material through distance learning programs.
Both learning systems have their own advantages and disadvantages.
The e-learning or online class is the act of learning and educating via digital resources. Online class helps students and teachers create ideas and developed communication with the used of advanced skills. The digital platforms for learning is vividly changing our education system due to high-speed internet and technologies advancements. The ministry of Electronics and Information Technology identifies e-learning as an essential tool for imparting education despite of its limitless advantages for students and teachers. However, the advancement of technology has made access to information quicker.
Modular Distance Learning features individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable to the learner. Learners under Modular Distance Learning can also use other resources such as Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study materials. Usually, teachers will have to deliver appropriate learning materials. And students can also access these materials by downloading electronic copies through their computer, tablet PC, or smartphone. The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners. If possible, they will conduct home visits to check on each student’s progress and performance.
And the Blended Learning refers to a learning delivery, combining face-to-face learning with any or a mix of online distance learning ; modular distance learning, and TV/Radio-based Instruction.
Certainly, live instruction is great in Distance Learning. The face-to-face lets teachers and students connect in a very authentic way, which often results in strong rapport and understanding. While not impossible, this kind of connection still seems much easier in person.
So why is distance learning even a thing?
As it turns out, there are a number of advantages when learning remotely.
Here are just a few.
1. Flexibility
The top benefit of distance education is its flexibility. Students can choose when, where, and how they learn by selecting the time, place, and medium for their education.
For those who want direct, live access to teachers - there are video conferencing options. But for students who may be doing their training around a job or other responsibilities, a more relaxed schedule may work better.
2. Easy Access
Whether due to remote location or being differently-abled, some students lack basic access to educational facilities. Remote learning programs offer every student the opportunity to learn and improve themself in the environment they find the most effective.
3. Less Cost
Thanks to the scalable nature of digital learning especially, distance learning is driving down the cost of education. .
Distance learning still has a lot of untapped potential to reach students where they are and connect educators and learners in new ways. From increased flexibility to new learning styles, it seems that the future of learning will be as diverse in time and place as it will be in taught.
